Bottle feeding your baby can come with its own challenges! It is important to keep bottles sterilized, and to use boiled and cooled water, or low sodium content bottled water. It is important to choose the right formula for your baby and to choose the right bottles. But occasionally, it can be overlooked how important it is to use the right teat size…..this is hugely important!!
Which teats and why?
The teat size for your baby’s bottle is important, as it is the teat that regulates the flow of milk to your baby. You don’t want them to be engulfed by milk, or struggle to get enough!! As your baby grows, so will their appetite, and you will need to change up your teat sizes.
How to know what teat size to use?
All packaging/labels for bottles and teats will give an age bracket for its use. We advise to use these age guides as an approximation, as all babies are different, and develop at different rates. You will know if your baby needs to move up in teat size, as they will start to suck harder on the bottle! This can lead to frustration, and upset during feeding time, as little one has to work extra hard, but is not getting enough milk! This frustration, fussing and tiredness at feeding time, can be missed. If baby has been feeding well normally, you may think that there is something wrong with them….but more often than not, a simple upgrade of the bottles teat can sort all that out!
Also to remember!!!
When bottle feeding you need to remember that formula and breast milk have different consistencies. Formula can be thicker and need a larger teat size, while breast milk is more free flowing. It might be a little bit of trial and error at first, but once you get the sizing right…..baby should be feeding away happily in no time!! Just keep on eye on moving up in teat sizes, as your little one moves on in development!
