Here are some calming techniques to try when your baby starts crying.
- If you are breast feeding let your baby suckle at your breast. If you bottle feed give your baby a soother. Don’t dip it in anything sweet, this is a bad habit to get into.
- Older babies like to use a bit of cloth or have a comfort blanket.
- Try rocking your baby in her pram or even go out for a walk if it’s not too late. Another trick that can work for some babies is a short trip in the car.
- Hold your baby close to you and gently move about. Try swaying and rocking, talk or sing to while you do this.
- Distract them, find something for them to look at or listen to. This could simple be music on the radio, some of your favourite songs or even one of their toys.
- Try rubbing their back firmly, you can this by holding them against you or lying face downwards or your lap.
- A baby massage is always a great for calming a baby. I would highly recommend finding out if there are any classes near you. It is very beneficial for all sorts of reasons. Talk to your little one as you’re massaging and always make sure the room is warm enough.
- A warm bath is a lovely way to relax, some babies will instantly calm down but there is a chance your baby could cry more, some baby’s just hate them. You know your baby best, if they like bath time then try this.
- If its night time or they are taking a nap make sure your baby isn’t too hot or too cold. Get a room thermometer to keep an eye on this.
If your baby is continually crying and can’t be comforted then it may be an illness that is causing it. Keep an eye out for Colic as this is a common one that makes your little one cry non stop.
